Protecting your skin this Winter!
The harsh cold air of winter makes the water in your skin evaporate quicker than usual resulting in tight, dry, flaky and often dull skin. Rosebank Mall is going to provide you with some great pointers on how to correctly treat and protect your skin this nippy season.
Regardless of your schedule or energy levels this winter, there are a few things which should remain consistent in your skincare regime throughout the year but even more so in the winter season – it is critically important to adapt your routine with the seasons. Start by ensuring you wash your face at the start and end the day. Don’t underestimate the importance of a good cleanse in the morning, some believe because they sleep makeup free and on clean linen that this is not necessary. But with 6-9 hours of perspiration, drivel and fine dirt which is not always visible to the naked eye – a morning face wash is as important as the cleansing of a made-up face.
Consider switching from a foam or clay wash to a cream-based cleanser. Many of the prominent skin care brands and ranges provide more than one formulation for exactly this reason. If you are unsure of what skincare range or product to switch to a good idea is to have your skin assessed at any of the Rosebank beauty tenants such as Dermalogica, Placecol, Sorbet or Kiehl’s. From this you will understand exactly what your skin requires which will make your product purchase process easier.
Remember that adapting the products you use also applies to makeup. Try to stay away from powders and heavy foundations as this will further dry out your skin during the chilly months of winter. Rather opt for a tinted moisturiser which is more cream than foundation based.
Maintenance is momentous. We suggest exfoliating and applying a moisturising mask at least every 10-14 days. Removing dead skin lets the products applied be absorbed into and penetrate the skin and therefore make the difference they are designed for. But be mindful of what products you apply to which body part. What is accepted by the skin on your body may cause blockage and breakout on your face/neck where pores are finer. So, applying coconut oil to your body after exfoliating is a great way to ensure much-needed moisture but applying this to your face could cause a reaction.
Two great and recommended home-made skin masks with organic ingredients from your kitchen are Honey and Avo and Yoghurt, Honey and Tumeric. The Avo and Honey mashed blend provides ample moisture and shine to dull and dry skin. While the Yoghurt, Honey and Tumeric paste purifies the skin resulting in a brighter complexion with the turmeric also fighting against wrinkles.
While we are in the kitchen, don’t forget to up your intake of water. We all know that water is the most essential key to hydration so while you are at it, incorporate a humidifier in your bedroom at night to add moisture to the air and hydrate skin. Avoid steaming hot showers and rather opt for a luke warm shower as hot water strips the skin of its’ natural oils. And finally, make a concerted effort to incorporate foods containing essential fatty oils like Omega 3,6,9 into your diet – this will hydrate your body from the inside out.
Most importantly, wear sunblock daily – even in the chilly air. You should ideally be applying sunblock to all exposed areas of your skin all year round – do not let the change of season hinder this.
