Cape Town’s Boulder Beach is a must! The main attraction being the African Penguins, which used to be called Black-footed penguins as well as Jackass Penguins because of their distinctive mating call that sounds like a braying donkey. But since several South American penguins apparently make the same noise, the name was changed to African Penguins. Although it is forbidden to touch or feed the penguins you can get just a few feet away from them which makes for awesome Instagram pics.
Knysna – The Circles in the Forest Hiking Trail is rich in flush greenery, beautiful scenery and history! Circles in the Forest is named after the book of the same title by acclaimed South African author Dalene Matthee, Kringe in ‘n Bos. The circular trail starts at Krisjan-se-Nek (Chris’ neck) where you are then given the option of an easy 3km route (+/- 1.5 hours), or a more strenuous 9km (+/- 3 hours) trail. Both these trails allot to its visitors’ beautiful trees, huge forest ferns, streams and a forest pool for cooling off in – the dark colour of the water is from the tannins of the fallen forest leaves – and is perfectly safe for drinking! You then end the trail by returning to the Krisjan-se-Nek picnic site where the famous Big Tree, an 800-900-year-old Yellowwood, is situated.
Continuing on the hiking trail but this time in The Drakensberg – Connect with nature in so many forms and with fantastic views of picturesque plateaus, rivers and grasslands. Due to the vastness of the Drakensburg it is unlikely one will ever completely cover this exquisite area, although you would want to try. With so many trails ranging from moderate hikes of a few hours to a full day strenuous hike to extreme 3-day hikes which include steep trails and ladders, you can truly immerse yourself in the wonder which is The Drakensburg. Some of the most advocated for parks include Royal Natal National Park, Cathedral Peak, and Champagne Castle.
One of the most loved South African destinations, is unequivocally the Kruger National Park which proudly boasts being one of the largest game reserves in Africa. With awe-inspiring encounters of the big five and other iconic animals this untamed environment bring to its visitors a truly African adventure with safaris and camp fires. The rawness of Africa will bring, even to returning visitors, ample delight and fulfillment.
Treading outside of the border of South Africa, a long but worthwhile trip will bring you to Victoria Falls. Also referred to as, “Mosi-oa-Tunya” the smoke that thunders is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and statistically speaking, the largest waterfall in the world. Its recognition comes from combining the height and width together to create the largest single sheet of flowing water – a definite bucket list item.
