Opportunities for a Fun, Exciting Holiday Break
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Does it matter when you’re talking Easter? Some people don’t realise it, but the tradition of eggs being painted, for our Christian customers, is from a story that said when Jesus was resurrected, eggs changed into a multitude of colours.
(We’re not sure if they were turned into chocolate too – though probably not.)
The practice of decorating eggshells is, in fact, quite an ancient one. Many cultures saw them, for obvious reasons, as symbols of life. Archaeologists have unearthed decorated Ostrich eggs 60 000 years old.
As far back as 5000 years ago in Sumeria, decorated eggs were appearing in the tombs and graves of lost loved ones.
This probably influenced later cultures that manifested in the Mesopotamian region. Which would have led to the idea of decorated eggs being made part of the story. Their symbolism for life would have inspired a connection with the Resurrection, which is what is celebrated over Easter.
But enough history!
Easter is around the corner. What are you planning to get up to during the break? Going away with the family to the coast or staying here in Jozi?
There’s something special about making treasure maps for the kids and marking where the hidden eggs will be. Are you considering painting your own eggs? You should check out CNA’s collection of paints in their crafts sections. Perhaps it’ll be easier to just buy lovely choc eggs at the Pick ‘n Pay. You’ll lose out on the fun of being creative, though.
Many people are planning on taking some days off and making the Easter period a proper holiday. If you are staying here, don’t forget, our mall makes a great place for families. Like to eat out at when you just feel like relaxing – and not worrying about the kitchen.
Also, don’t forget to enjoy your Thursday night on April 18, when you’ll be work-free the next day. Come to the Cinema Nouveau, have a box of popcorn and a cup of Coke – and even bring the kids if they’re old enough. It makes a difference from the usual explosions and superheroes they always watch. Actual character development in a story might be life-changing for them! Anyway, when it comes to cups of Coke, we like ours with plenty of ice!
Also consider that Easter is a time of transition, and change, and it might be time to consider your own transitions too. What will you grow into? If you consider Planet Fitness, at the Mall, yours could be an experience of mind over matter, as you live your best life by becoming your best fit self.
Whatever you end up doing, we wish all our customers a Happy Easter, especially if you’re Christian, and a Chag Sameach for Passover for our Jewish customers.
