Remember, Remember the Whole of Movember
Health and Beauty Nov 04, 2019
Guy Fawkes had quite a moustache. Unfortunately for him, being hung, drawn, and quartered meant prostate cancer was the last of his concerns. Why do we bring him up? We just like the wordplay of the title on the rhyme regarding Guy Fawkes night. To this day, we amuse ourselves with explosives representing what Fawkes tried to do to parliament.
And what else is amusing is the sometimes quirky moustaches men grow during the month of November. What is serious, though, is the cause they’re highlighting. Mainly, men’s health (generally in relation to cancers that affect men like prostate and testicular cancer). What a lot of South Africans don’t know is Movember is (internationally) also associated with depression among men, specifically the deep, dark depressive illnesses like Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder that can lead to suicide.
There is arguably no tragedy greater than suicide for many of the person’s loved ones. This is due in part to guilt (“What could we have done differently to avoid this outcome?”) and for many religions, it is regarded as a cardinal sin.
The truth is, depression-related suicides are due to mental illness and is therefore treatable. That’s why it’s important to acknowledge it, too, as part of Movember.
Now, while this is a bit of a melancholy subject, the fact men embrace a month dedicated to male health issues with a hearty moustache is uplifting in and of itself.
Movember moustaches don’t necessarily include a beard and many traditionalists choose not to grow an accompanying beard with it. While some already bearded men shave off just their moustache and keep the beard, allowing the moustache to grow throughout the month. This is at least funny because it gives them that Abraham Lincoln look. Arguably one of the most well-known US Presidents, he stood for freedom and liberty.
This is replicated in how we represent ourselves, as men, in Movember. Fighting for liberty from physical and mental illness among men.

As for Guy Fawkes, well, his own ending wasn’t explosive, but instead fairly cut and dry.
