Rosebank Mall Celebrating Youth Day
Lifestyle Jun 07, 2020
16 June 2020 marks the 44th anniversary of Youth Day. What makes this day so important? In 1976 students began the uprising in Soweto which spread countrywide. It changed South Africa’s struggle for freedom and democracy, and the fight for equal education will forever be etched in the country’s history.
Youth Day History
When Afrikaans and English was made compulsory as a medium of instruction in schools in 1974, students began mobilising themselves. Between 3000 and 10 000 students supported to peacefully protest against the government’s directive. However, this day resulted in a widespread revolt when police fired teargas and later live ammunition on demonstrating students. It tragically ended with hundreds of young people killed.
Modern Youth Day
Today, Youth Day is celebrated with the realisation of a vision and a dream fought for by thousands of South African youth. How youth fights for power and unity, and how they can positively impact the world, horrific things have happened that day, and they’ve come this far, but it’s also to remind them to keep moving forward.
Let’s face it, youth is not yet where they want to be. They continue to grapple with socio-economic challenges which ultimately impact their ability to access opportunities in the country’s economy. They’re affected by high unemployment, not just in South Africa, but globally. Making up two-thirds of our country’s population, solutions need to be found for young people to remain a national priority.
Annually, there are various youth development and empowerment initiatives that support young people and undo the dire conditions that marginalised youth under apartheid. Pro-youth policies and intervention programmes such as Youth Employment Service (YES) assist in getting youth to become active and equipped citizens who can practise meaningful participation in the country’s economy. All of these is to aid the reduction in unemployment.
