Summary of Workers’ Day
International Workers’ Day is a national holiday around the globe and takes place annually on 1 May in celebration of labour and the working classes.
Workers’ Day in South Africa has been officially recognised and observed since the first democratic elections in 1994 and holds special prominence because of the long road that South Africa had to walk to get fair employment standards. It also signifies the importance of trade and labour unions today for better working conditions alongside the need to eliminate systematic segregation.
Usually, this day is commemorated by people spending time with their families or see friends. The day is often still used for parades and demonstrations to raise awareness about wages and working conditions too.
Happy Workers’ Day, Rosebank!
